The film makes you think but it falls short of becoming a critically acclaimed film due to the acting and sometimes also directing. All in all, people who are really fascinated by Hitler or Gandhi should positively give this film a try.

But how is she supposed to get enough money for the surgery? She decides to have her students cheat on a state test so she can win a school incentive check.

What causes most black comedies to fail is the director's desire to make the lead character more sympathetic. Director Jake Kasdan makes Elizabeth a "mean girl" from the beginning of the movie to the end of it. She never gets to love having small breasts or gets used to not having much money. What Kasdan does do is create a smarmy character named Amy Squirrel, played by Lucy Punch, who is so annoying that we want Elizabeth to beat her up! Punch is great at playing the passive-aggressive school marm in this moviepicture.

The two men who circle around Elizabeth, Scott, played by Timberlake, and Russell, played by Jason Segal, show the difference between the best catch and the best guy. Scott is clueless but has good intentions. Russell is patient, funny, and doesn't seem to mind Elizabeth's bad intentions. Both are funny. Segal's discussion of a car ride sans map is a riot. The funniest scene in the film is probably the totally clothed humping session between Elizabeth and Scott.

Brief history of Warner Bros Studios

Warner Bros. The name goes back to the four founding Warner brothers, Harry, Jack, Sam and Albert.  The three eldest brothers began in the movie theatre bueinsss with a movie projector. They showed films in the mining towns of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The first theatre they opened was called the Cascade in 1903 based in Pennsylvania.

The earliest films were made back in the 1910s and 1920's. They have made hundreds of films and in a way helped shape the movie industry we see today.  The original studio was built on a plot of farmland in 1926. Soon they built Brownstone Street which was renamed Ashley Boulevard in 2002, and New York Street, which are now two of the oldest and most-used exterior sets.  This enabled them to churn out far more movies.  By the time the 1930's arrived they were making a lot more films and business was serious booming.  They constructed nine new soundstages which are all still in use today.

The 1940's brought us Casablanca and Yankee Doodle Dandy.  They also added three more soundstages and an exterior residential set which again is still in use today.  The street was used in East of Eden with James Dean and John Wayne in The Shootist.

Your Highness

Upcoming movie, "Your Highness,"  which features, among other things, the severed penis of a Minotaur as a trophy, sinks from low to lower in the first five minutes of the new movie.
One big surprise of this movie picture is that David Gordon Green agreed to be the director. After directing "George Washington" and "All the Real Girls," he looked like he had a great future. Another surprise is that Green and producer of "Your Highness," Scott Stuber, managed to talk such an impressive cast into working on this new movie release. Box office will be iffy.
Mel Brooks was known for making this type of spoof of genre movies look easy. Monty Python's troupe were the masters of the medieval fantasy. Green is fantasy clueless and he really shouldn't have listened to his buddy Danny McBride who co-wrote, co-produced and starred in what he calls his "twisted tale." "Your Highness" falls totally flat.
The set design is savvy and the images, filmed in Northern Ireland, are striking, and there is a plethora of digital effects. The characters wander around the landscape on some ill-defined quest that ends up being a contest as to who has the dirtiest mouth. The only special effects that men are going to remember are the semi-naked, sand-painted women in one vignette.
Danny McBride is Thadeous, the second son of the king who plays second-fiddle to his younger brother, Fabius, played by James Franco who's even duller here than in his Oscar hosting gig. Rasmus Hardiker plays servant Courtney, Thadeous' rather stupid companion. Belladonna, played by Zooey Deschanel , Fabious' intended bride, looks rather confused, and is kidnapped by Justin Therous, playing an evil wizard. Charles Dance, the king, insists that Thadeous join Fabius on his quest to get Belladonna back.
On their quest they meet Natalie Portman who plays a lady warrior who flips and pirouettes her way to joining the little band, which has been betrayed by friends played by Toby Jones and Damian Lewis. There's also a mechanical bird named Simon – you have to wonder what movie genre he materialized from.
The filmmakers have hidden the joke in this movie very well. McBride smokes dope and masturbates on his trek through the forest while making stupid wise-cracks. Any laughs he receives are because his lines are pathetic.
Tech credits are excellent against anything else that anyone else in the movie has accomplished.

Psycho (1960)

What can you say about a film that's been talked about to death? Just this: If you've never seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so, not because it's a way of paying homage to the one true master of modern film, but because it's so fun to watch.

Janet Leigh plays a bored office drone who decides to steal some loot from her boss's obnoxious client and parlay it into a new life with her all-too-distant boyfriend. All is going more or less according to plan until she stops in at the wrong motel, where she befriends a friendly if somewhat nerdy desk clerk only to find it causes problems with that clerk's possessive mother, who as her boy explains, "is not herself today." I'll say she isn't, and so would Leigh's Marion Crane, who maybe should have put up that "Do-Not-Disturb" sign before taking a shower.

You can feel the decade literally shifting out of '50s and into '60s with this one. Even the opening shot, where the camera looks over a Western U.S. city in the middle of the afternoon and zooms in on what looks exactly like the Texas School Book Depository overlooking Dealey Plaza. Norman Rockwell touches abound, like the decor of the motel, but look at what's going on around it. People dress well, they still wear fedoras and jackets, but in their tense conversations and hooded gazes you can feel the culture just ticking away like a time bomb waiting to explode.

Most especially, there's Anthony Perkins, who plays motel clerk Norman Bates in a very oddly naturalistic way, complete with facial tics and half-swallowed words, not the polished image one expected to see then. Just compare him with John Gavin, who plays Marion's boyfriend in the standard-actor-of-the-day way. Perkins manages to be so weirdly magnetizing, even in small moments like the way he stumbles on the word "falsity" or notes how creepy he finds dampness to be.

He shines in bigger scenes, too, like his tense chat with Martin Balsam's boorish but diligent private detective character, Arbogast, who along with Perkins and Leigh delivers a landmark performance. The way both actors play out the awkwardness in their conversation makes you literally sweat. Then again, you're always uneasy around Norman. You definitely feel wary of him right away, but you find yourself liking him, too, even when he's busy covering up "Mother's" misdeeds. Not since Bela Legosi played Dracula did you get a horror movie with such a compelling central figure.

If you are sampling the many other comments here, be sure to look up Merwyn Grote's. He makes an interesting, compelling case for how director Alfred Hitchcock used his television series as a template for "Psycho." Certainly "Psycho" looks more like early 1960s television than any of the more sumptuous fare Hitchcock had been bringing to screen at the time. Not only is it in black-and-white, not color, but the sets; a ramshackle motel, a mothbally old house, a couple of cheap looking bedrooms, a bathroom in a used-car dealership, are deliberately low class.

It's thrilling to see Hitchcock move so effectively outside his normal element, and move things along with such clinical detachment and low-key technical finesse. Thrilling, too, to realize this is one of his most accomplished products; made by a man who was experienced enough to know how the game was played, and daring enough still to break the rules; indeed, start a whole new ballgame.

Is it the best Hitchcock movie? It's definitely one of his best, right up there with "The 39 Steps" and "Strangers On A Train" and "Sabotage" and "Shadow Of A Doubt." He only once again came close to making as good a film, with "The Birds," while Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins never escaped the greatness they helped create here. Poor John Gavin had to quit the biz entirely, and became an ambassador.

Often imitated, parodied, referenced, and analyzed to death, "Psycho" still isn't played out nearly 45 years after it came out. You owe it to yourself to pay a visit to the Bates Motel; Norman has a room ready.

The Usual Suspects (1995)

After a gun fight on the docks leaves only one survivor with the majority dead, NYC agent Dave Kujan flies in to ensure that ex-cop Dean Keaton is really dead. During the questioning the survivor, Verbal Kint, tells of how events came to happen. Five criminals are brought together in a line up and decide to use the events to plan a job. However another survivor tells an extra story – one involving master criminal Kyser Soze. Kint reveals how the gang were forced into the fateful job by Soze – however who is Soze and why did the men try to steal what appears to be a ship load of drugs that didn't exist?

When I first saw this I saw it in the cinema – the very next day I went back and watched it again. The plot starts with a cliff hanger and appears to gradually answer the mystery - however what it actually does is create more questions for every answer it appears to give. It does this without frustrating you or without confusing the issue – in fact you don't know right till the end that you've been caught in a story teller's web. The plot unfolds like a normal thriller but it is anything but.

The strength of the film is in the writing but it is the direction that also manages to create a great mood. Singer uses clever shots weaving the story into a believable web of deceit. The cast add quality to every single line, every single scene. It's hard to imagine that the film could be the same with any one person changed.

Bryne is great as Keaton, his world weary cop drawn into a plan he can't control – or is he the master behind it all. Spacey gives a great performance as our eyes and ears as he retells the events, he deservedly won an Oscar for this role – before he got all soft and started becoming a starring man. Baldwin has the film of his life (albeit not hard!), he's really good and should be lucky to get another good role. Even the minor roles in the gang are great – Del Toro's performance is even better when you knew why he did it that way. Likewise Pollack will never have a better role – he has genuine tension between him and Baldwin (even in later interviews the dislike still seems real – with things like Pollack telling Baldwin he's sorry that his brothers stole all the food from his table). Palminteri does a great performance and is totally convincing. Postlethwaite is good despite playing an Asian (?) lawyer. Suzi Amis is good in her brief role and Esposito is as good as he always is.

Overall I could talk for hours about this film. It's rare for films now to have decent plots worth talking about however this manages it – it's still twisty and impressive no matter how many times you watch it.

Star Wars (1977)

What made this the hugely successful triumph it was? Was it casting, music, imagination, ingenuity, or luck?

I remember opening day at the theaters. I was old enough to remember every scene, every character, every nuance of this film; having committed it to memory forever, as if I would never again be able to see this beloved, instantly loved masterpiece.

I also remember that the HIT factor of this movie was so unexpected that you had to wait literal MONTHS to get the action figures promised on the cereal boxes. The pieces were still in the manufacturing process and we had to settle for coupons promising our toys in a few months. I wound up seeing this in the theaters a grand total of 36 times; much to my mother's dismay. She loved the movie as I did, but felt I was obsessed. Today, thirty years later, sitting here writing this review, I realize how right she was. I'm still obsessed with this movie, and with the subsequent movies which followed. I wait in great anticipation for Episode 3. I'm a fan, and I don't care what other people say about Episodes 1 & 2. I don't even mind the "prequel" factor, as the situation at the time, dictated to Lucas which movies he would do first.

See, I remember the studios saying to him that he had to choose from the three central climactic books, and trash the rest, or just trash the whole idea. He didn't exactly "sell out," he did what he had to do to get his movie...his vision...out there for us to see and experience. I admired his decision then, and I admire it now. Episodes 1-3 are being filmed now, because Lucas had the clout, the money, and the patience to give us his vision...his complete vision and not just the three center books of a 9-book series. I realize that now, there are dozens of books, but at the time, there were nine. And while most of us were happy with Episodes 4-6 and would not have missed 1-3 and 7-9, I personally am so very glad he has taken it upon himself to give us his full vision. I have enjoyed each and every installment with the same sense of awe and joy as I did this one.

The casting was the first triumph for this cinematic milestone. Ford is a charismatic and magnetic personality and portrayed Han with a professionalism that you'd expect from more seasoned actors. Sir Alec Guiness is an absolute joy as Obi Wan. His casting was precise and excellent in that part. Carrie Fisher portrayed Leia in a way that, up until then, had never been experienced. Most "princess" types before her were whining, whimpering, little snots who were incapable of anything beyond tripping and twisting their ankle in times of peril, while Fisher portrayed her character as a bold, brazen, yet sophisticated and educated woman who was aware of her surroundings and capable of defending herself and her realm with the utmost authority.

And Mark Hamil. He was perfectly cast as the whining little boy who wanted more, but was afraid to reach for it. He grows up quite well on film in these three installments, and endears himself to the audience so much the more for it. But a cast member who is almost always left out of these reviews is Peter Mayhew. Chewbacca. His character, as a supporting character to Han's, was exemplary. It's not easy portraying a walking carpet, yet holding the attention, admiration, and love of virtual millions. I am VERY happy about his being cast as Chewy in Episode 3. Couldn't happen to a more deserving...or capable...fellow. Bravo! And James Earl Jones's voice being used as the voice of Darth Vader, was pure genius. His commanding voice haunted the dreams of countless thousands of star-struck children for generations to come. I also have to say that this movie would not have had the charm it does had it not been for Anthony Daniels' C3P0. He is a gift and a joy.

The musical score by John Williams featured in this masterpiece was one of the contributing factors. But honestly, this movie's success was such a total surprise to everyone, including Lucas, that nothing could prepare the world for the aftermath of having witnessed this bona fide legend, first hand.

The story itself; replete with sub-plot after sub-plot, rich in dialog and detail, was beyond anyone's greatest expectations. Everyone, including Lucas, expected this movie to fail. It is a timeless classic, which I will not repeat here. There are too many movie reviews giving full details of the plot, and I won't be redundant beyond what I have already said.

However, that being said, there are a few points I would like to make concerning the symbolism of this endeavor. The Force is a metaphor for the psychic abilities with which we are all born. It was also a metaphor for hope and faith, dedication and commitment to the greater state of being. The Empire is said to have been a metaphor for the Germanic Nazi "storm troopers." While the Rebellion is said to have been symbolic of (what would later become) the NATO forces who defeated them.

And then there are the effects. The effects were, in 1977, so awesome; so creative; so ahead of their time, as to ensure this movie's vast success for the next forty years. George Lucas enjoys an almost god-like status among sci-fi/fantasy fans worldwide.

This movie does not rate a rating. Usually, when I say that, it is because the movie is so bad, or disappointing that I don't have the heart to rate it.

But in this case, it far surpasses any 10/10 rating I could give it.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

That's what this 1994 film is, a tour de force cinematic expression by Quentin Tarantino. A film with which Tarantino staked his claim to the title of genuine Hollywood wunderkind, auteur, young genius, all ala Orson Welles. Pretty heady stuff.

By what means? First, with a snappy script with witty if not cerebral give-and-take dialog, written mainly by Tarantino himself. Then, by populating the cast with an intriguing hand-picked array of actors to deliver those well-written snappy lines. This film oozes inspired casting, of actors who either played against type or at least became offbeat and edgy in ways in which we hadn't hitherto known them. Then, through the editing process, by telling the story in a maximum non-linear way, out of time, reducing the film to a series of seeming disjointed non-sequential vignettes, each vignette featuring the aforementioned snappy dialog delivered by the aforementioned hand-picked edgy actors. It is only after watching the entirety of the movie, and reflecting back on it, does the gestalt emerge for the viewer. And, it may take more than one viewing to get there. Then, lastly, by topping it all off with a snazzy soundtrack. That's how. Add all that stuff together and you get Pulp Fiction.

The film received its share of acclaim, and deservedly so. But that said, while seen by most as a good film, Pulp Fiction is not regarded as another Citizen Kane, and Pulp Fiction is not ensconced in the pantheon of the greatest of the great Hollywood films of all time. Those are for a reason. As good a cinematic achievement as Pulp Fiction is, the fact is that as a film it plows turf that's just way too coarse for comfort. Over-the-top blood, guts, and brains-blown-out violence. Gritty gutter language. Subject matter dwelling in the underbelly of life that goes way beyond seedy or unseemly. And it's all presented in a very graphic way. Some people really like it that way. Hey, I understand. That's what Tarantino wanted too, right? But the simple fact is that such fare isn't for everyone. Period. In this way its own intentional and unrelenting coarse nature is what self-selects it out of the greatness category. To achieve greatest of the greats greatness it has to be seen that way across the board, amongst every audience. Pulp Fiction by Tarantino's design isn't intended to appeal to everyone.

And whither Tarantino? That's the real question. His career didn't actually begin with Pulp Fiction, what with the auspicious start he made a couple of years earlier with Reservoir Dogs (1992). And Pulp Fiction of course certainly wasn't his last film. The Kill Bills, Vol. I and Vol. II, 2003 and 2004 respectively, were noteworthy and ambitious projects. And Jackie Brown (1997) made its mark too. But let's be honest here. When it comes to Tarantino it looks more and more like Pulp Fiction is as good as it gets. And he hasn't moved much beyond dwelling on the coarseness in any appreciable way. In fact, he's still earnestly tilling that soil. And getting less and less out of it too, if Grindhouse (2007) is any measure (and most will say it is a measure). Of course at his age he has the potential of many more films in him screaming to get out, but unless he evolves in some new directions, unless he stretches himself in some new and different ways as a storyteller, Pulp Fiction may end up being his magnum opus. Which isn't a terrible thing. Pulp Fiction is a remarkable movie. But, hey, we thought there'd be more.

In 1938, shortly after Hughes and Hepburn had separated, a hurricane completely destroyed the original house. The building is said to have literally floated down Long Island Sound, leaving only rubble and its foundations behind.

She won four Academy Awards for Best Actress; ‘Morning Glory' (1933); ‘Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' (1967); ‘The Lion in Winter' (1968); and ‘On Golden Pond' (1981). She also won an Emmy Award for her lead role in ‘Love Among the Ruins' in 1976.

In total Katharine Hepburn has appeared in more than fifty films. But it was her role as ‘Rose Sayer' in the 1951 film ‘The African Queen' alongside Humphrey Bogart which earned her iconic status.

The 127 Hours star, who himself had an Oscar nomination felt trapped in the material and also thought that the words did no justice to him. He added, "in the last week, when we really started focusing on the script for the live show and did a run-through, I said to the producer, 'I don't know why you hired me, because you haven't given me anything. I just don't think this stuff's going to be good'."

Even after telling the producer, when things didn't work out, he didn't fight the idea of being Marilyn Munroe. Although he looked funny but it did nothing to raise the act, which seemed amateurish and not at all Oscarish.
