Scarcely did Anurag Basu, the filmmaker, thought that the 18-year old girl (Kangana Ranaut) with an unusual look accidentally seen at the cafe, will make it big easily in the industry. The actress earlier had been working as a model in Delhi and after a point started working in the theatre. Her rise to stardom started when she was chosen by Anurag Basu for his movie Gangster in the main role.
Bagging the Filmfare Debutant Award was just the beginning of all the good times she was to have in Bollywood. From then on, offers have started coming her way. She chose Woh Lamhe as her 2nd movie and also acted in Life In A Metro from Anurag Basu, a well known movie in which her acting received good comments. Her success in Bollywood continued with Raaz- the Mystery Continues, Fashion and Tanu Weds Manu, establishing Kangana as a bankable actress.
She has starred in 12 films in a span of 5 years in Bollywood and has accepted challenging roles. In Fashion, Woh Lamhe and Gangster she enacted the character of a troubled person where as in Tanu Weds Manu her role was more of strong and stubborn. In Game, she enacted the role of a police officer in Britain. She does a varied range of characters in her forthcoming films like Happy New Year -as a New Yorker, Tez (by Priyadarsan) -as an action-girl and Department (directed by Ram Gopal Varma) - as a doctor.
Over the years, Kangana has earned a reputation as being an extremely hardworking and versatile actress among many people in Bollywood. Mani Shankar described how she would practice before the shooting. Anand L Rai, who worked with Kangana in ‘Tanu weds Manu', remarked that she possessed a childlike zest towards her work. Amod Mehra, the trade analyst, remarked that Kangana has matured in big way as an actress and has polished her acting ability in essaying characters efficiently. The commercial success of Tanu Weds Manu has backed her increase her star value in the Hindi movie industry.
As a star, a life without rumors can not be imagined and Kangana had hers too. She once attended a party thrown by Salman Khan in Bangkok uninvited and was rumored that she was constantly trying to develop tension between Amisha Patel, who is a close friend of the Dutt family, so that she can get closer to them. There are reports that she will wear a bikini in the yet to release film Rascals, made by David Dhawan. But she was heard saying that there have been no such demands by the filmmaker for the film.
