Lindsay Lohan gets the Hollywood Treatment

On 9 February Hollywood's favourite burnout racked up yet another charge on her increasingly long rap sheet.  Celebrity gossip enthusiasts will remember that on that day Lindsay Lohan was charged with grand theft when she reportedly stole a necklace worth some $2,500 from a jewellery store in Venice, California.  As a felony charge, grand theft carries a maximum sentence of three years if a defendant is found guilty.  Lohan and her lawyers vehemently denied the accusations, stating that the necklace was on loan and was to be given back to the boutique, which it eventually was after the police obtained a search warrant for Lohan's house.

The actress pled not guilty to the charges which immediately led to the California courts revoking her probation privileges (which she was on due to a prior drunk driving charge) and she was released from jail on bond.  Lohan was convicted and sentenced to only 120 days in prison with an accompanying 480 hours of community service. This is an incredible slap on the wrist for someone who has already been charged with two driving while intoxicated charges, served three jail sentences, entered drug and alcohol rehab five times in a three year period and has violated parole more times than is worth mentioning.

Feel like maybe there is a bit of preferential treatment? Wait, it gets better.  After being found guilty of a felony theft charge and sentenced to a laughably short prison stay, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office has recently announced that the actress will most likely be eligible for early release after serving only 14 days. As reported by many celebrity news outlets, those two weeks won't have to be in a real correctional facility anymore but instead can be served at home.  Under house arrest.  For two weeks.  For a repeat offender found guilty of a crime that warrants up to three years of hard time. Irritated yet?

Don't feel too bad for poor Lindsay, however, as she was recently cast to appear in two upcoming films, one alongside John Travolta which will begin production sometime in 2011. That is assuming Lohan can push back the next inevitable arrest on a petty charge until after the films are completed. Even if she does manage to land herself back in jail, however, rest assured that it will only be for a day or two if the crime is anything short of a first degree felony.  That's Hollywood, baby.
