Fear is What You Know About Them; But What If You Know Nothing?

<!-- p { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; } -->

Fear is a universal concept, and one that connects humans in a common thread. I suffer from myrmecophobia, others from the fears I know nothing about. Things that can make you stand, scream, puke, dream, are the ones we keep beside – not because we want them to fan us with their usual dose of fear transportation, no; we keep them because we do not know how we can get away from them. What do you fear?

Since the time we could devise ways to narrate the horror and violence that runs inside us, there have been so many things we devised. Murder, terrorism, torture, and other approaches became customary; the actions became superfluous because our mind would be experiencing too much. When cinema entered the scene, we became certain we have found the right medium to freeze and capture the fleeting demons of our nightmares, and inflict such atrocities on them that we feel arrived and victorious, even if the valor of those demons is hardly shriveled. Since then a race is on, to know who has suffered more, and who could produce the most horrifying moments in the movies that they make.

Several films have come and gone, a few of them still remind us of the days when a simple ‘boo!' from someone not in sight would make us pee in our pants. With the passage of time, however, the concept of booing has metamorphosed to expound more intricate situations, ones that ask questions from psychological abysses. Although they have maintained the aesthetic style because, after all, their primary motive has always been to entertain us. The best part with most of them is that they haven't grown old; the characters explain the same things over and over again, and yet we are drawn towards them every time we see them.

No two people can be the same, and so no two horror movies can have the same effect upon people. The genre may appear constricted and confined (what different points two ways of terror could make?), they all appear diverse when different directors stand up to explore our mind and patience. There are so many wonders out there that demand you see them, but you can't, if the sight and sound gets the better of you. But, if you save yourself from such ‘sights and sounds', films from other genres would definitely get the better of you.

Why not, then, allow the fears to envelop us? If nothing, they would at least help us become immune to the horrors that the society would inflict upon us. But that's philosophical aspect, which horror films only minutely appear to care about. So, what should you do then? Here: make room for some movies that someone has told you about, ask what your fear the most, search for them, leave yourself active and don't worry about the ‘boo!' anymore – those days are passé, yet can be brought back if you just happen to prepare yourself!
