Review of The Thing (2011)

There are two ways to create a remake; you can focus on the parts that made the movie so great in the first place, and then expand on those while adding new elements which salute the original yet also make it perfect for today's audiences. Then there is the other way, is to just remake it the same way, including the bad bits, without taking time to wonder why they were there in the first place, and throw in new stuff that doesn't belong there, resulting in a pretty poor movie. The Thing falls into the second category.

 

The version most of us remember is John Carpenter's from 1981, and this itself was actually a remake, albeit radical, of an original from 1951. You will recall that aUSbase in the Antarctic was besieged by an alien that was a shape shifter, but they didn't actually discover it, that honour went to the inhabitants of the Norwegian base, situated kilometres away. In telling the story of the Norwegian base should actually be a prequel, but the fact this version is identical to Carpenter's makes it a remake in the truest sense of the world.

 

A couple of Norwegian scientists crash their snowmobile into a crevice and find an alien spaceship there they, obviously, run to some US Grad students, Eric Christian Olsen and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, to help them. This kind off pandering between nations doesn't exactly inspire any confidence especially when you discover there is already an American pilot at the base, but this could just be the directors way of laying the groundwork for some forthcoming paranoia of the us VS them kind.

 

Having in their possession an alien in a giant ice cube proves far too tempting for these scientists and they decide to drill into it for some tissue samples, which, as anyone with half a brain cell would realise, never mind supposed boffins, that drilling into an alien is a pretty good way of waking them up. These guys think they have taken care of this menace but have they? The tissues reveal that the alien can take on the form of humans as well as others, they realise they can't trust anyone, sure didn't see that coming!

 

One positive from this whole debacle is the special effects, particularly regarding the shape shifting capabilities of the alien. They are pretty nasty, but some of them look somewhat familiar, and those who are fans of David Cronenberg will see some parts which are same old, same old. The real let down in this movie are the humans, all the Norwegians are stereotypically big, bearded, blonde and unwashed, and nobody has bothered to give the different characters any kind of personality.

 

This creates problems when we have to try and work out is somebody is really an alien, as we haven't got a clue who they were anyway. There is one stand out scene when they are trying to figure out how to differentiate between human and alien, but one good scene doesn't make a good horror movie. A highly disappointing movie that won't be remembered for the right reasons.

Review of Moneyball (2011)

Moneyball is, no question, one of the greatest films this year and the script is probably some of the finest writing that the medium has seen in years. The film is based on the book of the same name by Michael Lewis, and the adaptation of the book is superbly done. The script is brought to life in a fantastic way by Brad Pitt who does a great job in the lead role.

 

The film is written be Aaron Sorkin who wrote The Social Network and Steven Zaillian who wrote Schindler's List. The film is the story of an underdog baseball executive and the director, Bennet Miller, does an excellent job of combining real footage with fictional scenes.

 

The film tells the story of Manager Billy Beane, who is played by Pitt, and how he wants to change the entire way that baseball is evaluated. Beane has a team that come very close to winning the World Series but are beaten by a team that has four times as much budget for players than they have.

 

Beane sees this as unfair and goes about changing the system. The current problem is the small teams are always losing their players to the big budget teams, which means there is not much competition in the sport.

 

When Beane discovers a new way to score baseball from a sports statistician played by Jonah Hill he realises that should this be implemented, it would have a great effect on small budget teams like his own.

 

Pitt has said that his character is very complex and definably has some unusual quirks, for one he does not watch baseball games, he merely gets the results sent to him by a friend. Pitt does an excellent job of portraying the hard side of the character seen at work, but also his soft side which the audience sees when Beane is with his daughter.

 

Jonah Hill does a fantastic job in his role playing alongside Pitt, and their different characters on the screen and how well they work together is really one of the main reasons the movie is so good. The attention to detail paid by the film-makers to the original book is something that will please fans, even the little details are covered, such as the way Beane eats popcorn out of a coffee filter placed on his desk.

 

The film also makes excellent use of flashbacks, which are very important in building the character of Beane , and really show why he is so passionate about the cause that he is fighting for. It shows him as a young player who was expected to make it as a baseball star.

 

Those in the United States are going to have a bit of an advantage in understanding some of the sports parts of the film but even those unfamiliar with the sport will enjoy the movie. The writers really deserve credit for moving away from a lot of the very specific baseball language seen in the book and making a movie that is accessible to all audiences.

30 Minutes or Less (2011) Review

Chet and Nick and Chet (Aziz Ansari and Jesse Eisenberg) are not just best buddies, they are also roommates. Despite being so close, their lives are on completely different paths. Nick has got a major crush on Chet's sister, Chet has a very promising career but also a very big mouth, as he revealed a secret that ended the marriage of Nick's parents. But hey that's all in past as they have to put their differences aside as Nick has a bomb attached to his chest.

 

The fiends who felt the need to rig up Nick to a pile of explosives are Travis and Dwayne, (Nick Swarsdon and Danny McBride).  Dwayne has a hate-hate relationship with pop, who won the lottery, became a millionaire, and has spent every waking moment since telling his son that he is brainless and has no ambition. When pops goes too far one day Dwayne decides to hire a hitman, bump off pop and inherit his millions, simple.

 

The only thing spoiling Dwayne's master plan, is his lack of readies to pay he aforementioned hitman, and that's where Nick enters the plot. Travis and Dwayne pose as two guys who want nothing more than a pizza in front of the TV, and when Nick turns up with their snack they grab him, strap the bomb to him, and tell him he has two choices; either rob a bank for them or they'll blow him to bits.

 

As crazy as this storyline sounds, 30 Minutes or Less actually works very well as it stays within the parameters of the premise it sets at the beginning and doesn't try to veer into other, unnecessary areas to pad out the movie. The jokes are good enough to make you laugh, there's just about the right amount of action and just enough sentiment to make it endearing without reaching for the sick bag.

 

It also greatly benefits from the early character development, we are introduced to Nick by seeing him at work and when he gets home Chet is there. This may seem brief, but then you see it you will appreciate that it is perfectly adequate, plus, Ansari and Eisenberg use their great comic timing and on screen chemistry to bring these simple boys to life in a highly entertaining way.

 

Travis and Dwayne, on the other hand, are far from simple and there are many layers to their personalities, but only one actually develops fully, leaving the other trailing in his wake. Travis is the dude who follows the emotional arc, as in he starts the movie as one guy, goes through the whole gamut of emotions, and ends the movie as a completely transformed character.

 

The main fall down of this movie is Dwayne, a total moron that you very quickly couldn't give a damn about. He gains a smidge of sympathy at the start for the way his dad treats him, but when he hatches his mad plan you understand why his pop is so ashamed of his bumbling idiot if a son, and that he is also one mean SOB.

.

30 Minutes or Less has more than enough content to keep you entertained for the running time. There are a few flaws obviously, but overall a good effort from all concerned.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) Review

These apes certainly live a long time. Forty-three years after Charlton Heston was on the evolutionary pyramids short end, a new film appears that has resurrected the lucrative franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

 

Fox wisely stayed away from the attempt of remaking anything close to the original. As about ten year ago Tim Burton succeeded in doing that and in a bad way. Fox has decided on a scientific yarn with a contemporary flair that can serve as the prequel to the others. Strong special effects, great action and to date the best ape performance making this possibly a real chest thumper.

 

Many of the special effects were thanks in part to the breakthrough in Avatar. Also the experience over many years of Andy Serkis in hairpieces and makeup and all that goes with it officially closed the door of the past Ape films now and forever.

 

As with prior Ape films, this one hinges on the belief of the viewer that primates that are genetically advanced can possess cranial and emotional capacities that are similar to humans. This is done so well that audiences will stand and cheer the primates as they take out their revenge on their captors and launch an ambitious liberation movement.

 

This of course helps when the humans in the film are completely venal and dull as they appear. Will Rodman played by James Franco is the genetic scientist that makes all this possible. He experiences a breakthrough after five years researching a drug for gene therapy known as AOZ-112.

 

The drug advances a young chimp to new heights of ability and intelligence. Its side effects also end up reversing the dementia that the scientist's father, portrayed by John Lithgow, has been suffering from. That is seen by Will's money hungry boss to be a potential huge money maker.

 

But the dementia returns and Caesar the chimp transforms to a rebellious, rough malcontent adolescent who becomes hard to control because of his incredible strength. This chimp over and above all others that have preceded him is his own thinker. Caesar is eventually taken to a detention center that is run by a group of sadists led actor Tom Felton.

 

Nasty things are done to inmates and a prison riot ensue turning into a huge rebellion that all the San Francisco area ape population seems to join in on. The special effects particularly in the Bay area were quite good.

 

The writing is solid work done by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, and Rupert Wyatt directs well by moving the film at a steady pace that leads to a climatic action scene below the famed Golden Gate Bridge that satisfies even the most avid action seeker.

 

The door to a sequel was aptly left open in the final shot.  The film lacked in the human element as scientist Will and his girlfriend Caroline who is a vet should have been portrayed as opinionated, brainy, eccentric characters. The series is likely to continue and the first instalment in ten years is worth the time to go see it.

Cars 2 Review

Cars 2 may already be a bit more publicized than its original counterpart, and it certainly is better, but to leave it at this would be an understatement because not only is Cars 2 bigger and better, it is also one of the best films to come out this year, which is pretty impressive for a children's movie from Pixar.  This is also surprising given the fact that many people think that Cars was one of the weakest films Pixar ever released in their 16 years, but they did an excellent job with the follow-up.

Of course, Pixar has already exhausted a great deal of childhood themes making it harder to come up with original ideas what with toys, bugs, and monsters all off the table already.  However, after Cars the first film it did not seem as if another Lightning McQueen saga was going to be any better.  Enter Cars 2 that suddenly turned Lightning into Fast and the Furious for tots and you have a story that instantly gets better by the second and is quite engaging for adults as well as the children.  Outside of the fact that the film is completely different than the first, it also has a great subplot making it worth the time to watch it.

Back for the second time around are the voices of Owen Wilson as Lightning and Larry the Cable Guy as Mater which is the main relationship discussed, but then under the surface is a nice spy caper and action film that even opens with a signature James Bond action scene that is sure to delight both young and old audiences alike.  In this scene we quickly meet Finn McMissle voiced by Michael Caine that is also along for the ride and really start to buckle down into a new type of Cars.

The first story that comes up is the Fast and the Furious plot with Lightning attempting to prove that he is the fastest out there as he enters the World Grand Prix along with different cars from all over the world which sees him travel toTokyo,London, and Porto Corso.  The real challenge comes from a Formula 1 car named Francesco Bernoulli who is voiced by John Turturro and really ads to the spice of every race in full glory 3D.  Soon enough things get complicated however as they think Mater is an American spy and things start to get messy.

From here strong political themes start to develop which is odd for a Pixar film and alternative fueled cars spear off against those that use fossil fuel leading to some spies, some agents, and some evil doing of course that even eventually leads to some character deaths which is highly unexpected in a Pixar film.  The rest you will have to head to the theatre to see, but make sure that you purchase a 3D ticket because between the action and the racing this is one film you will be glad you popped out an extra few dollars to see in its intended glory.

Right from the outset, the captivating visuality and clever screenplay make Beginners compulsive viewing. Mike Mills, a filmmaker, artist and graphic designer takes us a highly personal journey in to the mysteries of love. This movie tells the tale of a man who, after his mother dies, discovers his Father is gay. These events mirror Mills' own life, and the father lives a late and aggressively gay life until succumbing to cancer.

As the man tries to make sense of the lives his parents lived, he struggles with his own reaction to growing up in a house full of secrets and lies. We are taken on a poignant and bittersweet journey as he tries to untangle the jumble of emotions that is love.  His fathers late in life acceptance of who he really was has a profound effect on the son, who this tale is all about. This is not a gay love story, but the risks one will take for love.

He wasn't shocked by his father coming out and living a gay lifestyle, as much as the risks he was taking in the name of love. Ewen McGregor, who oozes the sadness, bewilderment and confusion that this character is feeling beautifully portrays the man, Oliver. He knows his parents weren't in a loveless marriage, it was more of a settled complacency where love took second place.

Oliver also has to come to terms with the fact that the relationship he has always aspired to wasn't what it seemed at all. His makes him reconsider his whole life, and wonder what he would do for love. His father, played by Christopher Plummer, suddenly presents him with a new role model, not as a homosexual, but as a man determined to get as much out of life as he can in the short time he has left.

Oliver finds himself alone with all his confusion and his dad's dog for company, when he meets Anna, a French actress who is only staying in Los Angeles for a short time. She shakes him out of his melancholy but he falls in love with her, but which role model will be follow, the repressed but not unhappy man he grew up with, or the wild grab it while you can older version?

There is no fixed time that this movie takes place, the scenes from the past have been ordered in the way that Mills best thinks suits his life's journey. Like the filmmaker himself, Oliver is a graphic artist and the doodles, sketches and graffiti represent his increasing self-awareness. He has in depth conversations with the dog, whose responses are delivered via sub titles.

Beginners is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking in that it embraces all manner of movies. From the silent era when Oliver and Anna are conversing with pen and paper as she has lost her voice, to the slide shows and sketches that Oliver arranges to help illustrate the process as he mentally works out the meanings of life and love.

Kung Fu Panda 2 Review

In light of other mediocre and lacklustre sequels that are around at the minute, it can be hard to get out of the mindset that all sequels will be as bad. Step forward Kung Fu Panda 2, that extraordinary commodity that has you hoping and praying for a third instalment. The only downside of this incredible film is that in only lasts a scant 90 minutes.

From the outset the animated landscape is outstanding and could possibly produce a few eye-gasms in the audience. Something to bear in mind here is that this is not a hysterical, laugh out loud film, it is a charming story well told with excellent voiceovers. You would think that an obese panda called Po that is voiced by Jack Black and does kung fu would be a recipe for hilarity, this isn't the case but it doesn't detract from the film one iota.

A new animation within in the umbrella of 3D CGI has been used for this film, and it shows. A back story unfolds regarding Lord Shen, an evil peacock voiced by Gary Oldman. Shen has been banished by his parents from the Great Kingdom due to the atrocities he committed against pandas. His crimes were because of a prophecy which foretold that his demise would be at the hand of a Black & White warrior.

After he's been kicked out, he gathered together his army of Wolves and has vowed to return to China as its ruler. The bird kept his promise, and has created a weapon that will beat any style of Kung Fu. He soon unleashes this new firepower across ancient China, destroying the cities as he goes so there can be no threats to the reign of terror he enjoys.

Obviously Po and the ‘furious 5' aren't just going to lie down and let Shen get away with this. So Po, Monkey (Jackie Chan), Tigress (Angeline Jolie), Viper (Lucy Liu), Mantis (Seth Rogen) and Crane (David Cross) leave the valley of peace and have exciting battles against Shen across towns, rivers and even a giant fortress. During one battle Po discovers that is actually Shen who hold the key to him discovering his origins.

The thrilling battles will make for an excellent videogame that will fly off the shelves. Now, there are times when the story seems very obvious and fundamental, and it is at these times you need to remember the target audience for this film is kids. The environments and execution make this a wonderful tale that anyone of any age can really enjoy.

There are serious moments in the film, but thankfully they never bog you down and are quickly lightened by some sparkling dialogue. The star of the show in undoubtedly Shen, with another outstanding but understated performance by the great Gary Oldman. His evil sarcasm slips effortlessly between comedy and cruelty, and the casting for this bitter and arrogant peacock was inspired.

Don't buy a ticket to see Kung Fu Panda 2 expecting 90 minutes of belly laughs, go and see this film to be amused, entranced and thoroughly entertained.

Hangover Part II Review

 

There are a few words you can use to describe "The Hangover Part II." Hysterical-no, laugh out loud-no, self indulgent, lazy and arrogant-definite. It's hard to think of when such a pathetic and half-hearted sequel has been produced to cash in on the success of the original. ‘The Hangover' grossed over $467m worldwide back in 2009, the most successful ever R-rated comedy.

Now this is where filmmakers should get their brain into gear before they waste time and money bringing garbage like ‘The Hangover Part II' to the big screen. The charm and originality of the original was what made it so alluring and successful. It should have been left as an outstanding but stand alone film, but you can see why the temptation to make a sequel was there.

The thing is a sequel to a monster hit needs to be thought about carefully. The same characters obviously, and even the same premise can work if it is written cleverly and has originality. This film has neither, and you get the feeling that the script has just been thrown together from those rejected scripts that lie around gathering dust in producers and directors offices.

One of the greatest scenes in ‘The Hangover' was when the motley crew woke up in the trashed hotel room, a brilliant piece of storytelling written succinctly and performed meticulously. The director of Part II, Todd Phillips obviously thought so too, as he has repeated it, and several other scenes and jokes. Now you can see why this film is lazy and self-indulgent.

They have remade the first film but moved it to Thailand. The boys don't find a baby this time; it's a chain smoking monkey. Stu the mid mannered dentist wakes up this time with all his teeth intact, but has a tattoo on his face. He doesn't burst into song at the piano this time either; it's with a guitar. The final insult to the audience's intelligence is that he doesn't sleep with a hooker, he's in Thailand, try and guess where this goes!

The arrogant Phil is once again played by Bradley Cooper, and Zach Galifianakis returns as Alan, the passive get aggressive man child. His portrayal of Alan in the original made Galifianakis a stand out star, and while they've tried to give him the best line in the new film he just comes across as infuriating. The missing groom from the original, Doug, is here again too, well barely here. He doesn't go missing but misses out again on a wild night.

What really beggars belief is that one of the most unimpressive characters from the original, Mr. Chow, gets even more screentime in part II, and there is no reason why this effeminate gangster played by Ken Jeong should be even there at all. This film is a complete waste of space, it runs for 101 minutes, which is about 100 minutes too long, and deserves to have gone straight to DVD.
