When three strangers look like they're ready to take advantage of Craig's plight, Craig dispatches the strangers and we learn that Craig is one tough guy.
Absolution is the name of the town that Craig chooses as the place to ride into. Colonel Dolarhyde, played by Ford, is the nasty cattle baron who rules Absolution. Bitterness and a fierce power emanates from Ford. It seems like he's looking for a fight.
When Craig challenges Dolarhyde's son, played by Paul Dano, it looks like Dolarhyde has found his fight. Of course there are some other people in town. Clancy Brown plays the preacher, Sam Rockwell is the saloon-keeper, his wife is played by Ana de la Requera, Adam Beach is the colonel's cowhand, and Keith Carradine plays the sheriff – and does a great job of evoking the memory of his famous grandfather.

He tries to get rid of the birds but pretty soon his nice apartment becomes a winter home for the birds. Then there are more complications when his real estate deal tanks and his kids keep trying to get him back with the Ex, played by Carla Gugino.

30 Minutes or Less (2011) Review

Chet and Nick and Chet (Aziz Ansari and Jesse Eisenberg) are not just best buddies, they are also roommates. Despite being so close, their lives are on completely different paths. Nick has got a major crush on Chet's sister, Chet has a very promising career but also a very big mouth, as he revealed a secret that ended the marriage of Nick's parents. But hey that's all in past as they have to put their differences aside as Nick has a bomb attached to his chest.

 

The fiends who felt the need to rig up Nick to a pile of explosives are Travis and Dwayne, (Nick Swarsdon and Danny McBride).  Dwayne has a hate-hate relationship with pop, who won the lottery, became a millionaire, and has spent every waking moment since telling his son that he is brainless and has no ambition. When pops goes too far one day Dwayne decides to hire a hitman, bump off pop and inherit his millions, simple.

 

The only thing spoiling Dwayne's master plan, is his lack of readies to pay he aforementioned hitman, and that's where Nick enters the plot. Travis and Dwayne pose as two guys who want nothing more than a pizza in front of the TV, and when Nick turns up with their snack they grab him, strap the bomb to him, and tell him he has two choices; either rob a bank for them or they'll blow him to bits.

 

As crazy as this storyline sounds, 30 Minutes or Less actually works very well as it stays within the parameters of the premise it sets at the beginning and doesn't try to veer into other, unnecessary areas to pad out the movie. The jokes are good enough to make you laugh, there's just about the right amount of action and just enough sentiment to make it endearing without reaching for the sick bag.

 

It also greatly benefits from the early character development, we are introduced to Nick by seeing him at work and when he gets home Chet is there. This may seem brief, but then you see it you will appreciate that it is perfectly adequate, plus, Ansari and Eisenberg use their great comic timing and on screen chemistry to bring these simple boys to life in a highly entertaining way.

 

Travis and Dwayne, on the other hand, are far from simple and there are many layers to their personalities, but only one actually develops fully, leaving the other trailing in his wake. Travis is the dude who follows the emotional arc, as in he starts the movie as one guy, goes through the whole gamut of emotions, and ends the movie as a completely transformed character.

 

The main fall down of this movie is Dwayne, a total moron that you very quickly couldn't give a damn about. He gains a smidge of sympathy at the start for the way his dad treats him, but when he hatches his mad plan you understand why his pop is so ashamed of his bumbling idiot if a son, and that he is also one mean SOB.

.

30 Minutes or Less has more than enough content to keep you entertained for the running time. There are a few flaws obviously, but overall a good effort from all concerned.

Dumbledore's memories being stored in the Pensieve.  The memories are seen dropping into a liquid in the Pensieve (bowl) and this was created by taking painted pictures (the memories) and amalgamating them into specially created software which produced the look of the liquid and the pictures floating down into it.

The sphere of water produced by Dumbledore's spell to trap Voldemort.  The broomstick rig came into its own again which together with Plexiglass spheres with water squired over the top and inside created the effect of Voldement floating and spinning in a sphere of water.

The ice covering the frozen lake from which Harry gets back the sword of Gryffindor.  When the camera is filming from above the lake, the ice is created by thick sheets of Plexiglass covered in a frosty texturing.  When filming beneath the "ice", wax is used floating on the water.  Apparently this is a well known technique in the movies.

The Gringotts dragon.   The rather emaciated Gringotts dragon was actually modelled on some photographs provided by the RCPCA of mistreated dogs.  The idea was to capture a "hangdog" look such that viewers would feel sorry for it rather than repulsed but it still had to be frightening.  Once the concept was agreed, the dragon was sculpted and painted using a 3D computer program.  A skeleton of the dragon was built and muscle geometry created which animated the skin to simulate movement.

For filming the kids sitting on the dragon, a full scale section of its back was sculpted and covered with a silicon hide.  For movement a motion control base and a rig allowed for movement of the different aspects of the dragon including parts of its spine, loose skin under its neck.

Take Me Home Tonight

It's possible that new movie "Take Me Home Tonight" might actually have a good story buried somewhere beneath the bad acting, lousy writing, terrible slapstick, and jokes that fly like lead balloons, but director Michael Dowse never gives it a chance to  emerge.
In the entire first act, and well into the second, over the top comedy is rammed at the audience until none of it even registers anymore. This upcoming movie's audience doesn't even seem to notice when a relationship between a guy and a girl he liked in high school starts to bud.
Young audiences may be lured into the theater by the movie trailer that puts its emphasis on heavy partying, but for the most part, "Take Me Home Tonight" is a DVD in the making.
Gordon Kaywin, and the new movie's star, Topher Grace, are the executive producers and real life best friends since they were 15. Their intention was  to write a comedy based on life as best friends well beyond high school and college. Jackie and Jeff Filgo wrote the script, just like Kaywin and Grace asked them to. Unfortunately, the most noticeable thing about this script is that the friendship doesn't make any sense.
It would be possible for the relationship between two guys to work, despite the fact that one of them, in the movie picture, is an engineer with a degree from MIT and the other is a jobless ex-car salesman, because they might have something else in common. However, the movie is based on the fact that the two men have a strong bond and have nothing whatsoever in common.
Grace's Matt Franklin is the son of a cop and yet goes with a friend to steal a car, drives while drunk and under lots of other "influences, is instrumental in starting fights at parties, and then ends up crashing the car he stole because he's trying out the coke he finds in the glove box.
The movie's silly central set up is that Matt, a nice looking, smart guy, can't get a date with a former high school beauty named Tori, played by Teresa Palmer. And the fact that his twin sister, played by Ann Faris, is going to marry a stupid partier played by Chris Pratt, is equally goofy.
None of this makes sense. Matt and Tori only hook up when she decides she's as lost as he is. At that point Barry finds the love of his life, Kitchelle, played by Michelle Trachtenberg. And this is right after a weird encounter with a strange, female sexual predator played by Angie Everhart.
Nobody is going to give these relationships more than a day, and neither are they going to give "Take Me Home Tonight" more than 24 hours on the big screen.

Pixar has another winner with upcoming movie "Cars 2." "Cars", the 2006 model from Pixar, is considered by movie news to be one of its best efforts and it seems that director John Lasseter has gone a couple of steps further to make "Cars 2" even better. Animated characters Lightning McQueen and pick-up truck Mater have left Radiator Springs and have joined the Grand Prix circuit in this new movie. The "friends" go around the world on the circuit and get involved in some international intrigue. The cars in "Cars 2" are plenty sweeter than the cars in "Fast Five," and new movierelease "Cars 2" runs more smoothly than a lot of Pixar's recent moviepictures. This movie is going to do well both at home and internationally.

This sequel just fine on its own and it's not necessary to see the first movie to understand the second. Lasseter is a car fancier and uses the international locations to add all sorts of vintage cars to the show from an Aston Martin to an East German Trabant. He also dresses up Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the end credits to the movie. Lasseter manages to have something special or beautiful to look at in every scene and to listen to as well.

Co-directors Brad Lewis and Dan Fogelman, along with Lasseter, and screenwriter Ben Queen, have come up with a story that's simple but not too simple. The movie begins on the ocean and is full of scary oil rigs and British spies, Finn McMissile (Michael Caine's interpretation of an Aston Martin), and Holley Shiftwell, a Miata-type car voiced by Emily Mortimer. These "cars" use their special enhancements like wings and weapons to make a nighttime escape from the sea.

Back in the desert, red car Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, is hanging out with buddy tow-truck Mater, voiced by Larry the Cable Guy. Here Lightning is talked into entering some races where a Land Rover named Sir Miles Axelrod, voiced by Eddie Izzard, plans to prove that his clean fuel called Allinol is a good substitute for gas. There are loads of jokes here: verbal, visual, and musical.

The first international scene takes place in Tokyo. Cars are involved in sumo wrestling here and the lights of Ginza are extraordinarily bright. The lights (Pixar makes them preternaturally bright to make up for the dimming effect of 3D glasses) are so bright you'll be glad for your 3D glasses.

In Paris, Les Halles is a spare parts marketplace, you'll see Gusteau's from Ratatouille, and the tops of the Eiffel Tower, and the Arch de Triomphe are re-imagined. Mater is back after returning home after Tokyo and his laugh can get pretty old and take over the film a bit.

Then on to Porto Corsa, Italy: it tends to look like a Monaca if it were a theme park. Francesco, the Italian champ voiced by John Turturro, plans to run over Lightning McQueen and Mater, in disguise, plans to get in with a bunch of Euro cars who are going to discredit Allinol so as to keep oil markets high. You'll get the message.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) Review

These apes certainly live a long time. Forty-three years after Charlton Heston was on the evolutionary pyramids short end, a new film appears that has resurrected the lucrative franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

 

Fox wisely stayed away from the attempt of remaking anything close to the original. As about ten year ago Tim Burton succeeded in doing that and in a bad way. Fox has decided on a scientific yarn with a contemporary flair that can serve as the prequel to the others. Strong special effects, great action and to date the best ape performance making this possibly a real chest thumper.

 

Many of the special effects were thanks in part to the breakthrough in Avatar. Also the experience over many years of Andy Serkis in hairpieces and makeup and all that goes with it officially closed the door of the past Ape films now and forever.

 

As with prior Ape films, this one hinges on the belief of the viewer that primates that are genetically advanced can possess cranial and emotional capacities that are similar to humans. This is done so well that audiences will stand and cheer the primates as they take out their revenge on their captors and launch an ambitious liberation movement.

 

This of course helps when the humans in the film are completely venal and dull as they appear. Will Rodman played by James Franco is the genetic scientist that makes all this possible. He experiences a breakthrough after five years researching a drug for gene therapy known as AOZ-112.

 

The drug advances a young chimp to new heights of ability and intelligence. Its side effects also end up reversing the dementia that the scientist's father, portrayed by John Lithgow, has been suffering from. That is seen by Will's money hungry boss to be a potential huge money maker.

 

But the dementia returns and Caesar the chimp transforms to a rebellious, rough malcontent adolescent who becomes hard to control because of his incredible strength. This chimp over and above all others that have preceded him is his own thinker. Caesar is eventually taken to a detention center that is run by a group of sadists led actor Tom Felton.

 

Nasty things are done to inmates and a prison riot ensue turning into a huge rebellion that all the San Francisco area ape population seems to join in on. The special effects particularly in the Bay area were quite good.

 

The writing is solid work done by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, and Rupert Wyatt directs well by moving the film at a steady pace that leads to a climatic action scene below the famed Golden Gate Bridge that satisfies even the most avid action seeker.

 

The door to a sequel was aptly left open in the final shot.  The film lacked in the human element as scientist Will and his girlfriend Caroline who is a vet should have been portrayed as opinionated, brainy, eccentric characters. The series is likely to continue and the first instalment in ten years is worth the time to go see it.

Upcoming movie, "Beginners," is Mike Mills' first dramatic feature since "Thumbsucker" in 2005. He manages to mix family drama an understated comedy and his special brand of artfulness in this new movie. Christopher Plummer plays Hal Fields, a 75 year old who has lost his wife and then tells his adult son, played by Ewan McGregor, that he's ready to come out of the closet and begin living as a gay man. Just about the time that Ewan has digested the idea that his father is not only out of the closet but has a much younger lover, played by Goran Visnjic, he also learns that his father has cancer. Anna, played by Melanie Laurent, an attractive French actress Oliver meets at a costume party, helps 38 year old Oliver come to terms with the changes in his life. Unfortunately, Oliver is simply not adept at relationships.

Movie picture "Beginners" was picked up by Focus Features at the Toronto Film Festival for release in June 2011 at the same time they picked up "The Kids Are All Right" to release in June 2010. Movie forums say that "Beginners" is not going to be as successful as "The Kids Are All Right" which brought in $20M. It just doesn't have as friendly a trailer or as many celebrity leading roles. However it's getting good reviews, and is favored by the gay community so it may do better than "Thumbsucker" which brought in $1.3M. It will probably be big in art houses this summer.

For Mills this is a semi-autobiographical film. He based it on his experiences with his own father who also came out at 75. He has made "Beginners" into a sweet family story. Although the story is unusual, Mills has managed to make it very easy to relate to. Not only does it show that an adult can finally get to really know his elderly parent but that sometimes the bittersweet truth is that the relationship may be over just as it peaks.

Christopher Plummer is excellent in his role as Hal Fields – a man at the end of his life who commits himself to living honestly for the first time. His last roles were as Tolstoy in "The Last Station" and he starred in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" as well.

Ewan McGregor is wonderful as this serious role as the crushed son. He has excellent chemistry with Plummer and their scenes together are honest and tender. Melanie Laurent is a strong supporting actress and Goran Visnjic is also terrific in his role as Plummer's much younger boyfriend.

Mills adds superb little touches like subtitles so that Hal's Jack Russell can communicate with Oliver. Oliver's wonderful graphic design work reflects the fact that graphic design is one of talented Mills' other professions.

Friends with Benefits (2011) Review

The buzz theme this year seems to be romantic comedies about friends who decide to get down and dirty without any annoying complications such as having a relationship. There have been two this year so far, buy how many more there are to come is anybody's guess. In January we had ‘No Strings Attached' a so so movie that didn't live up to its hype and never came close to reaping the expected revenue.

 

Now we have the highly publicized Friends With Benefits, which was actually the original title of the first movie. This is ironic as Friends With Benefits is the movie that ‘no Strings Attached' tried so hard to be, but failed miserably. Starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake FWB is funny, highly enjoyable and finally gives Mr. Timberlake the vehicle he has been searching for for so long.

 

Kunis plays Jamie, a GQ head hunter who convinces Timberlake's Dylan to his successful blogging position in LA and come and join the magazine's New York office as a creative director. Of course they hit it off, become great friends and enjoy the single life in NYC.   The only thing they are missing is the sex, so make a pact to become the aforementioned friends with benefits.

 

Predictably, things start to get mightily complicated when they start to develop reel feelings for each other, and of course this is obvious to everyone but them. Now this sounds, so far, as if it is just a pile of clichés thrown into a hat, pulled out in a random order and made into a movie. The big thing with this movie is that it is almost a parody of itself.

 

The characters make references to how their lives are playing out like a rom com, and what a ridiculous genre of moviemaking that is. There are even scenes showing a fake rom com being made and our leads are ridiculing it. Yes this is a bit over the top but is sire gets the point across and is done so well and with so much good humor you can't fail to find it funny.

This movie also does what other comedies are meant to do but often fail, it makes you laugh out loud. Kunis and Timberlake are perfect in their roles, they have a great chemistry and their comedic presence should be used as examples in classes for those who want to be comedy actors. Another plus is that the supporting cast also shines, the casting of Woody Harrelson as GQ's gay sports columnist was a stroke of genius, as was giving Patricia Clarkson the role of Jamie's mom.

 

There is a serious storyline that arrives so suddenly it jars you, and that revolves around Dylan's dad, a sterling performance from Richard Jenkins. Although surprising, it is vital to the plot and has a positive effect on the lead characters. Whilst this movie isn't perfect, most of the jokes are spot on and it certainly makes full use of its R rating. There is sex, vulgarity and nudity, which are mainly rear view shots of Timberlake.

Cowboys &amp; Aliens (2011) Review

Cowboys & Aliens is a weird fusion of a genre from the past, as Westerns are usually set somewhere in the late 1800s and not something that we think of as futuristic. The blending together of the two does not always work and that is because the first scene that deals with shoot them up gunfights, bar fights and more is so well done and choreographed that what comes later cannot hold a candle to the start.

You can compare it to From Dawn to Dusk when everyone thought they were fine and had taken safe refuge until they realized the people were not who they thought they were or seemed to be. The opening of the movie is great and sets the tone for the rest of it. This film that Steven Spielberg executive produced we see completely barren desert landscape in Absolution, New Mexico with not a trace of human life.

Suddenly Daniel Craig who plays Jake Lonergan comes out of a deep sleep. He sees a gadget attached to his wrist and the realization hits him that he has lost his memory. Does not remember his name, his lover or where he is from. He enters town in time to save people from being robbed by Percy Dolarhyde the son of the wealthy land baron played by Harrison Ford.

Through a series of flashbacks Jake learns his identity and faces Woodrow Dolarhyde (Ford) like it was a remake of High Noon. When the UFO's come, the bullets are useless and they need to round up everyone including former foes like the Apaches and even rival gangs so that Jake can try and save the world with his magic bracelet, by taking out the flying object and pulverizing the huge ten foot aliens.

Because of the combination of Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford the box offices will be full. Ford's character is a menace and good for nothing while Craig's character is the only one with the possibility of saving New Mexico.

Once the cowboys begin to fire at the aliens with revolvers as well as shotguns, then the movie changes genre to a regular old zombie film, with heads getting shot off, blood gushing all over the place. Still not until the gorgeous Ella Swenson played by Olivia Wilde, whose character for the majority of the movie is unknown takes action and then all bets are off, no one is safe.

The movie is directed with some super special effects. The movie starts too fast and cannot hold itself up through the middle and much less in the end. The shoot-out in the beginning ended the best part of the movie after just the first twenty minutes. The cast of actors is exceptional and the storyline is a good try but the movie lacks a lead actor to go to and let the rest follow. This attempt of combing the genre of the past with that of the future just does not work out well.

Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) Review

Punctuation is prominent in the title Crazy, Stupid, Love, the latest film by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. The first two words in the title are not adjectives that describe the third. Rather it is if they are all synonyms all describing the same thing.

 

It is quite obvious the studio wants to sell the film as a sex farce with the main attraction being Steve Carell. But this movie changes direction very unexpectedly more than once and plays with things that lead to deep moments of feeling and moments that create uncontrollable laughter. The storyline does not lead you to where you would expect it would – making it refreshing.

 

At some point let's hope Carell can stop feeling the need to play a complete schlep. His talent makes him so capable of doing more. Nevertheless with the film he comes close to leaving the schlep behind than in any other movie he's been in since Little Miss Sunshine or Dan in Real Life.

 

Cal Weaver his character is a sad sort of person, who was not always like that and could change being a loser to something else if he wanted to. First you see him figuratively slapped over the head with a skillet at dinner as his wife says she has slept around and wants a divorce.

 

Hurt deeply he moves to a little bachelor pad and starts to go to singles bars close to home. Since he was married his entire adult life he has no idea how to communicate with women. Finally Jacob Palmer a womanizing bar patron takes him under his wing to give him an attitude and fashion makeover.

 

He shows Cal what to do, gives him a sense of presence and timing and under the tutelage of Palmer things begin to work right for Cal. Finally he scores with an alcoholic in recovery played perfectly by Marisa Tomei. In many films that would end the storyline. Loser becomes winner then becomes a complete jerk, attracts his wife and then she reinvents him to his old self.

 

But the script by Dan Fogelman wants to go a bit deeper with it find the real emotions of our world. Life is plenty more complex than simple romantic comedies want us to think. Because the movie is as much about unrequited love as it is anything else. There is a long list one after the other of people that care for someone who will not return the affection. From Cal to Emily then to Cal's son and his desire for the babysitter who also has a thing or two for Cal.

 

Most of the comedies about romance today vacillate before eventually putting the two who belong together, together  but the script is more than that and uses frustrated desires for deeper and richer comedy.

 

This film could end up being the summer's most surprisingly enjoyable film. A comedy that just does not create things to end them with punch line after punch line, this comedy has more content and substance and even though you laugh, you still feel a twinge as well.
