This upcoming movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Black Lively, and Peter Sarsgaard. New Movie "Green Lantern" makes one wonder just how many more superhero movies the public will put up with. Warner Bros. is looking to launch a new fantasy/superhero franchise even though we've seen plenty of movies based on DC and Marvel comics lately. It's hard to tell if this movie picture will do well or not because eventually the public is going to tire of movies in this genre.
The Green Lantern has been known to generations of comic book fans since 1940 when the Green Lantern first unleashed his superpowers of infinite strength and the ability to keep destruction in abeyance. He can also leap quickly into space and back again. He wears a skin-tight, green outfit with a hood to match. It's not as good looking as that of Superman or Batman and if you didn't look like Ryan Reynolds there's no way you could get away with wearing it!
In this new movie release, the Green Lantern has seen his father, a test pilot, die in flames. The Green Lantern (AKA Hal Johnson) grows up to become a pilot himself who feels that one should walk away from both plane crashes and women. Although Carol Ferris, played by Blake Lively, heiress to an aviation fortune and a fellow pilot, has been dumped twice by Johnson, she just can't give up on him.
Then the guardians of an elite group from an ancient and far-flung civilization invite Johnson to join their special group. It's so hard to get into that there has never been a human in it before. The script, written by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Goldberg is very wordy. Most of the audience isn't going to know a lot about Hal as he's not a first tier superhero.
The universe, in the movie, is composed of 3,600 sectors. Oa has the most advanced sector and the oldest. Oa is an intergalactic area ruled over by wrinkly wise men that look a lot like Yoda and a bunch of other aliens dedicated to fighting evil.
Director Martin Campbell's favorite character seems to be the amusing Hector Hammon, played by Peter Sarsgaard. He's a brilliant, yet nerdy scientist, hired by the government to examine the corpse of Abin Sur. In his excitement he becomes contaminated and is turned into a mind reader who looks like the Elephant Man and has a love for the dark side. He also wants to settle a problem with his father, a hotshot politician played by Tim Robbins. Sarsgaard really seems to enjoy the role and often seems to be parodying John Malkovich.
The scariest threat in "The Green Lantern" is Parallax. He attacks earth as a brown cloud reminiscent of an octopus – billowing, changing shape, and breathing fire.

Cowboys & Aliens

Director Jon Favreau has really developed his characters in "Cowboys & Aliens," a new movie that mixes film genres like restaurant fusion. The idea comes from a graphic novel by author Scott Mitchell Rosenberg that folds an alien invasion right into a Western. The success of this movie picture lies in the fact that all of the actors do a terrific job of playing their characters straight. There isn't even a hint of camp.
The mix is about 2/3 Western and 1/3 alien invasion. Since aliens are a big deal right now, it's notable that Favreau went with 2/3 Western. The last big Western was "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood in 1992. This may be why "Cowboys & Aliens" is successful – we all expect aliens, but it's hard to pull off a Western.
According to movie forums, "Cowboys & Aliens" was a huge hit at its Comic-Con world premiere. Now it looks like this new movie release from Universal is going to strike gold at the box office. It may even be a big draw to older audiences who enjoy a good western. Mature stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford are also a good draw for the older crowd.
The producers, executive producers, and writers are a real Hollywood "dream team." The intelligence level of this film is so high that it looks like Favreau deserves the true credit for keeping the movie true to both the alien and Western genres. A darned good western yarn is being told before the aliens fall from the skies. Then again, Westerns have traditionally stuck close to tradition AND allowed a generous space for side stories.
As any fan of Westerns knows, the start of every good Western involves a stranger on a horse, and he's coming into town. Craig plays the stranger. He wakes up in the middle of the desert with an odd looking shackle on his wrist and has no idea how it got there. When three strangers look like they're ready to take advantage of Craig's plight, Craig dispatches the strangers and we learn that Craig is one tough guy.
Absolution is the name of the town that Craig chooses as the place to ride into. Colonel Dolarhyde, played by Ford, is the nasty cattle baron who rules Absolution. Bitterness and a fierce power emanates from Ford. It seems like he's looking for a fight.
When Craig challenges Dolarhyde's son, played by Paul Dano, it looks like Dolarhyde has found his fight. Of course there are some other people in town. Clancy Brown plays the preacher, Sam Rockwell is the saloon-keeper, his wife is played by Ana de la Requera, Adam Beach is the colonel's cowhand, and Keith Carradine plays the sheriff – and does a great job of evoking the memory of his famous grandfather.

New movie "Mr. Popper's Penguins," a new adaptation of the 1938 book for kids by Richard and Florence Atwater is fresh and fun for every age group. Jim Carrey stars in this movie picture about Mr. Popper and six adorable penguins which turn his life upside down, teaching him about how important family and other people are. Parents should be rushing their kids down to the local movie theater to see new movie release "Mr. Popper's Penguins," especially after recent hits "March of the Penguins" and Oscar winner "Happy Feet."

After this spring's kids' movie, "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" bombed at the box office, here comes this new James Carrey movie, a great movie for a guy who could surely use a big hit movie. And movie reviews have it that this is a great showcase for Carrey's many comic talents. This role is one that would have been perfect for Eddie Murphy in his Doctor Doolittle days. In this story Carrey's late father sends a pack of penguins to the Park Avenue apartment of his son. It starts out with one penguin but then five more suddenly appear to live with Carrey, a divorced father with two kids who's living alone in his fancy apartment and pursuing a career as a real estate developer. He tries to get rid of the birds but pretty soon his nice apartment becomes a winter home for the birds. Then there are more complications when his real estate deal tanks and his kids keep trying to get him back with the Ex, played by Carla Gugino.

While there's plenty of slapstick in "Mr. Popper's Penguins," the penguins seem to become a large and loving family for Carrey. Angela Lansbury has a great few scenes as someone Carrey is trying to charm into buying some real estate. Clark Gregg plays a zoo employee and is good in his role. The penguin's trainer, Scott Drieschman, is probably the person who deserves the most kudos. He has these birds charming the audience with their adorable antics in every scene.
